Symbol of Sovereignty: The relic became a symbol of divine right to rule, and successive monarchs safeguarded it, building temples near their royal residences.

 

Kandy Era: The relic found its permanent home in Kandy in the late 16th century. The current temple was constructed during the reign of King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe in the 18th century.
